Abstract

Youth unemployment remains a significant developmental challenge in Ghana despite increasing investments in education and skills training. Contemporary labour markets increasingly demand transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, resilience, and adaptability, which are often inadequately developed through traditional classroom instruction alone. School sports programmes have emerged as important platforms for fostering these employability competencies while simultaneously promoting physical, social, and psychological development among young people. However, the effectiveness of school sports in developing workforce skills is largely dependent on the availability of adequate funding, infrastructure, equipment, and qualified personnel. This study explored the role of school sports funding in developing employability skills among Ghanaian youth. Guided by Human Capital Theory, Positive Youth Development Theory, and Stakeholder Theory, the study adopted a qualitative case study design. Twenty-five participants, comprising physical education teachers, sports coordinators, school administrators, employers, and former student-athletes, were purposively selected. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis, and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that adequately funded school sports programmes enhanced leadership, teamwork, communication, discipline, and problem-solving skills that were highly valued in the labour market. However, inadequate funding constrained programme quality, participation opportunities, and skill development outcomes. The study concluded that school sports funding represented a strategic investment in youth employability and workforce readiness. The study recommended increased government investment, stronger public-private partnerships, and the integration of employability outcomes into school sports policies.
